Hysterectomy Q & A

When would I need a hysterectomy?

If you suffer from a gynecological condition or an illness that is directly related to your uterus, you may need a hysterectomy — the removal of your uterus and sometimes your fallopian tubes and ovaries. Conditions in which you may need a hysterectomy include:

  • Heavy or unusual menstrual bleeding
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Endometriosis
  • Adenomyosis
  • Uterine prolapse
  • Cancer of the uterus, cervix, or ovaries

Typically, a hysterectomy is the last resort when other treatments fail to provide the relief you need from pain, discomfort, and other severe symptoms. Dr. Sherry Neyman often recommends a variety of other treatments and therapies before resorting to surgery.

What are the different types of hysterectomies?

During a hysterectomy, Dr. Neyman may remove your entire uterus, or part of it, depending on your health condition. Typically, the three main hysterectomy types include:

  • Partial: removes only your uterus, leaving the cervix
  • Total: removes both your uterus and cervix
  • Total with salpingo-oophorectomy: removes your entire uterus plus one or both ovaries and fallopian tubes

Traditionally, open surgery that requires a large incision across your lower abdomen has been the typical method of removing your uterus. Fortunately, technology has come a long way, and most types of hysterectomies can be performed laparoscopically or robotically. This approach is much less invasive and offers a shorter recovery time.

When it comes to laparoscopic and robotic surgeries, Dr. Neyman is one of the leading gynecologists in the field. She uses the latest technology to perform complex gynecologic surgeries through the smallest incisions to provide the least interruption in your life.

What is involved with the da Vinci hysterectomy?

The da Vinci® robotic-assisted surgery is a minimally invasive technique that allows Dr. Neyman to perform a hysterectomy with just a few incisions. If you’re a good candidate for da Vinci Single-Site® Surgery, Dr. Neyman can make just one small incision through your belly button to remove your uterus. The result is a virtually scarless outcome and a significantly shorter recovery time.

The da Vinci hysterectomy provides a more comfortable experience with many advantages, including:

  • Less blood loss
  • Less pain
  • Same-day discharge (no hospital stay
  • Two-week recovery period

Additionally, with the da Vinci hysterectomy, they offer an On-Q pump that drips pain medicine directly into the incision site. This limits the number of narcotics you need for pain and the related negative side effects that often accompany those medications.
